Five Steps to Getting Your Engineering License

November 30, 2022 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article (and video above), I provide you with 5 easy steps that you can use to start the process of getting your engineering license.

Here Are Five Steps to Getting Your Engineering License

1. Contact the State Education Department in the State Where You Wish to Seek Licensure

Each state has its own education department that dictates the experience required to get your license. You will need to contact the state department and explain to them your specific experience and ask them if they will allow you to sit for the exam.

2. Fill Out the Application Form

Be sure that when you fill out the application you follow the instructions and reference the name of the person in the state education department that told you that you can sit for the exam. Also, include the date of the conversation, and if possible, any correspondence received through email.

3. Have Someone Review Your Application

Before you submit your application, have someone who was previously accepted to sit for the FE exam in your state review your application, and provide feedback to you.

4. Submit Your Application

5. Start Preparing for the Exam

While you are waiting for the outcome, start preparing for the exam. The FE exam is going to require a lot of preparation, especially for someone who has been out of school for 20 years. I highly recommend that you sign up for a FE review course, like PPI which has some great courses.

Also remember that if you don’t pass the FE exam on the first try, keep trying as getting your engineering license is so valuable and gives you so much flexibility in your engineering career.
