FE Exam Approved Calculators 2023 – New and Updated

October 4, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article, (and video above), I delve into the details of the approved calculators for the year 2023.  If you’re gearing up to take this crucial step towards professional licensure, you’ll definitely want to pay close attention.

Taking the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is a significant milestone for any aspiring engineer, and one of the key tools you’ll rely on during the exam is your calculator. Trust me, it’s not just any calculator; it’s your trusty sidekick for tackling those complex engineering problems. Before the big day, it’s essential to become best friends with your calculator. I’m talking about knowing it inside out! Here are some operations you should be confident with:

  • Vector operations
  • Matrix operations
  • Using complex numbers
  • Solving logarithms
  • Solving permutations
  • Solving integrals and derivatives
  • Storing and recalling variables
  • Converting between polar and rectangular numbers
  • Switching between degrees and radians
  • Solving systems of linear equations
  • Understanding the time value of money

Digital Calculator Option

For those of you taking computer-based exams, the NCEES has introduced a digital calculator. It’s modeled after the TI-30X IIS Scientific Calculator and can be accessed on the same computer as the exam. While it’s a great backup, remember it might be a bit slower than a handheld calculator. Plus, you’ll have to switch back and forth between the exam and the calculator, which can be time-consuming. Avoid this hassle by ensuring your handheld calculator is charged and ready to go the night before the exam.

Approved Calculator Models

The NCEES keeps a close eye on these, updating the list annually. Here are the only 3 approved calculators that you can use for the 2023 exams:

  • CASIO

The NCEES approves all fx-115 and fx-991 models for use on its exams. So, any Casio calculator you pick must have ‘fx-115’ or ‘fx-991’ in its model name. Here are a couple of approved models:

* Casio fx-115ES PLUS Engineering/Scientific Calculator

* Casio fx-991EX Engineering/Scientific Calculator

  • HEWLETT PACKARD

If you’re an HP fan, there are only two approved models you can bring:

* HP 33s Scientific Calculator

* HP 35s Scientific Calculator

  • TEXAS INSTRUMENTS

Texas Instruments enthusiasts, you’re in luck! The NCEES approves all TI-30X and TI-36X models for use on its exams. Just remember that any Texas Instruments calculator you choose must have ‘TI-30X’ or ‘TI-36X’ in its model name. The two most popular options are:

* TI-30X IIS Scientific Calculator (Remember, it’s also available digitally on the exam)

* TI-36X Pro Scientific Calculator

Make sure to get your hands on one of these approved calculators and become best friends with it before the FE exam. Remember, preparation is key to success.

How to Apply for Your EIT Certificate – A Simple 5-Step Guide

September 20, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article, (and video above), I walk you through the steps of applying for your EIT certificate, after you have passed the FE exam.

Here Are the Five Steps to Apply for Your EIT Exam:

  1. Check the requirements for EIT certification in your state. Each state has its own requirements for EIT certification, so it’s important to check with your state board of engineering to find out what you need to do. In general, you will need to have a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution, have passed the FE exam, and have a certain number of years of engineering experience.
  2. Gather the required documentation. In addition to passing the FE exam, you will need to provide the state board with documentation of your education and experience. This may include transcripts from your university, letters of recommendation, and an engineering experience verification form.
  3. Complete the application form. The state board will have an application form that you will need to complete. This form will ask for your personal information, education, experience, and other relevant information.
  4. Pay the application fee. There is usually an application fee for EIT certification. The amount of the fee will vary from state to state.
  5. Submit your application. Once you have completed the application form and paid the fee, you can submit your application to the state board. The state board will review your application and approve or deny your request for EIT certification. If your application is approved, you will receive an EIT certificate in the mail.

Here Are Some Additional Tips for Applying for Your EIT Exam:

Unsupervised Engineering Experience: Does it Count Towards Qualifying for the PE Exam?

September 12, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article (and video above), I answer a question from one of our listeners who asked:

I am on active duty studying and preparing for the PE Exam. Most of my engineering experience has not been supervised by licensed PEs. Can I still account for these engineering experiences towards my total years of experience to qualify for the exam?

When it comes to qualifying for a professional engineering (PE) exam, most licensing boards require a certain number of years of engineering experience in addition to a relevant degree. The exact requirements can vary by state but typically range from 2-5 years of experience.

The good news is that this experience doesn’t necessarily have to be under the supervision of a licensed PE. However, you may need to provide additional documentation or explanation of your experience to the licensing board or exam committee if it is not.

For example, if you worked as an engineer for a company but didn’t have a direct supervisor who was a licensed PE, you may need to provide details about the projects you worked on, your responsibilities and duties, and any other relevant information that demonstrates your engineering knowledge and skills.

Qualifying Engineering Experience

In order to constitute as qualifying experience, the experience must meet a number of criteria.

Decoding Codes and Standards: A Guide to Utilizing Them in the PE Exam

August 1, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article (and video above), I explain the importance of codes and standards in the PE Exam, how they shape the engineering practice, and their role in the PE exam. I also tell you where to find these valuable resources and how to effectively use them during the exam.

The Codes and Standards section, accounts for approximately 10 questions on the PE exam. This section presents a great opportunity to excel in the exam, so make sure to leverage it to your advantage.

The PE Exam is a professional engineering exam that tests the knowledge and skills of engineers who want to become licensed professionals in their respective fields. The exam covers a wide range of topics, including mathematics, engineering sciences, ethics, and professional practice. However, codes and standards are a critical component of the exam, as they are the foundation of engineering practice.

Codes and standards are sets of guidelines and regulations that define how engineering projects should be designed, constructed, and maintained. They are developed by professional organizations, government agencies, and industry groups to ensure safety, quality, and reliability in engineering projects. Therefore, candidates taking the PE Exam must have a deep understanding of the codes and standards related to their discipline.

The exam questions may ask candidates to identify the relevant codes and standards for a specific scenario or to apply the codes and standards to solve a problem. They are used for both conceptual questions and process-oriented questions. For example, a civil engineer may be asked to identify the relevant building codes for a specific construction project or to calculate the required thickness of a concrete slab based on the American Concrete Institute (or ACI) code.

To prepare for the exam, candidates must study the relevant codes and standards thoroughly. They should be familiar with the content, structure, and application of each code and standard. They should also understand how to use these resources to solve problems and make decisions in their professional practice.

How Do You Find Out What Codes May Be Discussed on Your Exam?
