The Journey from FE Exam to PE License

November 1, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article (and video above), I talk with Mike Nunley, PE, CEO, and President at MKN. With over 60 employees, Mike’s journey to success is nothing short of remarkable. In this episode, Mike talks about the importance of taking the FE exam early in your career, which is the first step towards obtaining your PE license, and how licensure showcases your dedication and self-motivation.

Here Are Some of the Questions I Ask Mike:

  • How has your license helped your career, and why is it important?
  • What motivated you to tackle the rigorous process of the FE exam, and how did you navigate through it?
  • When hiring engineers regularly, how does seeing an FE or EIT on a candidate’s resume influence your perspective during the interview process?

Here Are Some Key Points Discussed in This Episode:

  • A PE license can be crucial for taking on leadership roles and stamping projects, enabling individuals to steer their careers and businesses more independently rather than relying on others to meet stringent regulatory requirements.
  • Taking exams soon after graduating can be advantageous, as indicated by the benefits of studying with classmates, exchanging resources, and retaining information more effectively, resulting in a higher likelihood of passing exams such as PE on the first try.
  • Having an FE or EIT can indicate that a person is proactive and motivated, having gone beyond their regular coursework to advance their career, suggesting their potential as a strong future leader within a company.

About Mike Nunley, PE, CEO

MKNMichael K. Nunley is the distinguished CEO and President of Michael K. Nunley & Associates (MKN), a reputable company based in Central California. FE Exam Approved Calculators 2023 – New and Updated

October 4, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article, (and video above), I delve into the details of the approved calculators for the year 2023.  If you’re gearing up to take this crucial step towards professional licensure, you’ll definitely want to pay close attention.

Taking the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is a significant milestone for any aspiring engineer, and one of the key tools you’ll rely on during the exam is your calculator. Trust me, it’s not just any calculator; it’s your trusty sidekick for tackling those complex engineering problems. Before the big day, it’s essential to become best friends with your calculator. I’m talking about knowing it inside out! Here are some operations you should be confident with:

  • Vector operations
  • Matrix operations
  • Using complex numbers
  • Solving logarithms
  • Solving permutations
  • Solving integrals and derivatives
  • Storing and recalling variables
  • Converting between polar and rectangular numbers
  • Switching between degrees and radians
  • Solving systems of linear equations
  • Understanding the time value of money

Digital Calculator Option

For those of you taking computer-based exams, the NCEES has introduced a digital calculator. It’s modeled after the TI-30X IIS Scientific Calculator and can be accessed on the same computer as the exam. While it’s a great backup, remember it might be a bit slower than a handheld calculator. Plus, you’ll have to switch back and forth between the exam and the calculator, which can be time-consuming. Avoid this hassle by ensuring your handheld calculator is charged and ready to go the night before the exam.

Approved Calculator Models

The NCEES keeps a close eye on these, updating the list annually. Here are the only 3 approved calculators that you can use for the 2023 exams:

  • CASIO

The NCEES approves all fx-115 and fx-991 models for use on its exams. So, any Casio calculator you pick must have ‘fx-115’ or ‘fx-991’ in its model name. Here are a couple of approved models:

* Casio fx-115ES PLUS Engineering/Scientific Calculator

* Casio fx-991EX Engineering/Scientific Calculator

  • HEWLETT PACKARD

If you’re an HP fan, there are only two approved models you can bring:

* HP 33s Scientific Calculator

* HP 35s Scientific Calculator

  • TEXAS INSTRUMENTS

Texas Instruments enthusiasts, you’re in luck! The NCEES approves all TI-30X and TI-36X models for use on its exams. Just remember that any Texas Instruments calculator you choose must have ‘TI-30X’ or ‘TI-36X’ in its model name. The two most popular options are:

* TI-30X IIS Scientific Calculator (Remember, it’s also available digitally on the exam)

* TI-36X Pro Scientific Calculator

Make sure to get your hands on one of these approved calculators and become best friends with it before the FE exam. Remember, preparation is key to success.

How to Apply for Your EIT Certificate – A Simple 5-Step Guide

September 20, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article, (and video above), I walk you through the steps of applying for your EIT certificate, after you have passed the FE exam.

Here Are the Five Steps to Apply for Your EIT Exam:

  1. Check the requirements for EIT certification in your state. Each state has its own requirements for EIT certification, so it’s important to check with your state board of engineering to find out what you need to do. In general, you will need to have a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution, have passed the FE exam, and have a certain number of years of engineering experience.
  2. Gather the required documentation. In addition to passing the FE exam, you will need to provide the state board with documentation of your education and experience. This may include transcripts from your university, letters of recommendation, and an engineering experience verification form.
  3. Complete the application form. The state board will have an application form that you will need to complete. This form will ask for your personal information, education, experience, and other relevant information.
  4. Pay the application fee. There is usually an application fee for EIT certification. The amount of the fee will vary from state to state.
  5. Submit your application. Once you have completed the application form and paid the fee, you can submit your application to the state board. The state board will review your application and approve or deny your request for EIT certification. If your application is approved, you will receive an EIT certificate in the mail.

Group Studying for the FE Exam: Weighing the Pros and Cons

July 26, 2023 by Anthony Fasano, P.E. Leave a Comment

In this article, (and video above), I explore the topic of group studying for the FE Exam and whether it is beneficial or not. Studying for the FE Exam is a crucial step in an engineer’s journey, and finding the most effective study methods is essential for success

Group studying for the FE Exam can offer several advantages. It provides an opportunity for students to collaborate, share knowledge, and tackle challenging problems together. By working in a group, students can learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives, which can enhance their understanding of the exam topics, as well as their performance.

Another benefit of group studying is that it helps students stay motivated and accountable. When studying as a group, individuals are more likely to remain focused and committed to their study goals because they don’t want to let their fellow group members down. The shared sense of purpose can create a supportive environment that encourages active engagement and consistent progress.

Group Studying May Not Be Suitable for Everyone

Some individuals may find it distracting or prefer studying alone, allowing them to create a more personalized study environment that maximizes their skill sets and preferences.
